Our Story.Built For Good Times.

We make hats built for good times, unlike anything else on the planet. What started with two people in a living room is now a tight 10 person team in a Portland warehouse. No investors. No famous backers. Just a community over 300,000 strong.

How It All Started

It started with a hat that fell in a river. More than a decade later, that same idea has been worn on every continent. Here is the whole story, straight from the founder, the long way.

Rafting down the Toutle River, where the very first Findlay water hat was born. 2005

The First Findlay

A Hat Worth Saving.

I consider myself a hat addict. I never leave the house without one. Back in 2005, that was true as ever.

I went rafting down the mighty Toutle River with some of my closest friends. I was too young to have a license, but I had a raft, and that was almost as cool. Halfway down the river our raft capsized, and my khaki quilted Burton hat, my favorite at the time, fell off into the murky water of the Toutle.

The next time we faced that river, I was determined not to lose my hat again. I took the shoelaces out of my shoes, cut a small hole in the side of my new hat with a pocket knife, and the first Findlay hat was born. I called it my water hat, and I wore it every time I went to the river or lake.

Taking The Shot

Everything I Had. $1,400.

Fast forward eight years. I grew up a bit, but my love for hats had not changed. I was a professional photographer in a crazy competitive, saturated industry. My photo career was going okay, but I needed something else to work on during the winter season. I still had my water hat, and I got comments on it every time I wore it.

"Dude, that hat is so sick. Where did you get it? You made it? If you made more, I would buy one."

So I decided to give it a shot. I pulled everything I had out of my bank account, about $1,400, and put it into our first run of hats.

Sarah was my girlfriend at the time and was on board to learn how to sew and help us launch the company. We knew nothing about sourcing headwear, in-house production, shipping, or running a business that sells physical goods. But after a heavy amount of research, we finally pulled something together.

We launched on December 1st, 2013.

Harold Findlay, Jimmy's grandfather, wearing an early Findlay hat sample. The Name

Why Findlay?

A Name Worth Keeping.

We almost named this company "Action Hats," but that just did not sound right. Around the time we were looking for a name, my grandpa, Harold Findlay, was on his last leg of life.

My middle name is Findlay, named after him, and he was always an inspiration to me. I loved our family name, and the "F" and the "Y" happen to go well together on a hat.

With my grandparents' permission, we moved forward with the name Findlay Hats. My grandpa passed shortly before our launch, but my grandma stuck around long enough to see the ride. She was always so tickled by this company, excited by every bit of it. She joked about when her royalty checks would start rolling in, autographed a stack of our thank you cards, and loved being part of it. I made sure she got free hats for life. They are both gone now, but I am proud to carry their name forward.

Garage Based, World Domination

Wake Up. Walk Downstairs. Work.

We launched in late 2013 in the living room of a floating home. We had a small handheld grommet press, a sewing machine, a camera, a computer, and about 80 hats. From there we dedicated every day to building the best company we could.

We worked out of the living room for almost a year before moving off the floating home and into a real house with a two car garage. That garage was perfect. Enough space to work, store inventory, and grow.

Around this time we were selling enough hats that Sarah could quit her job as a barista and focus fully on Findlay with me. We slowly added more machines, including our first embroidery machine, and brought on our first two employees, Nick and Tyler, from our group of friends. The commute was a dream. The rainy Portland winters gave us a little cabin fever, but we would not have traded it.

Nationwide Roll Out

Into Nearly 200 Stores.

Somewhere in this process we were picked up by the largest action sports retailer in the world, Zumiez. They saw our active community and unique product and gave us a shot. That opportunity gave our garage based brand a chance to be seen around the country, in close to 200 of their stores.

We made a point to travel to as many of those locations as we could. We wanted to share the product knowledge and meet the teams that would be selling Findlay Hats. Those trips were an amazing experience, and we made a handful of friends we still keep in touch with to this day.

Findlay Worldwide

One Of Ours. In Rome.

When I do something, I tend to hyper focus on it. Findlay was, and still is, my life. Most of my waking hours go to some level of work: brainstorming growth, talking with the Findlay Force, running our marketing and advertising, fixing the embroidery machine, and putting out the countless little fires we hit every day.

Back in 2016 my family invited Sarah and me to Rome for ten days. I was hesitant. I had not taken a vacation anywhere close to that long since Findlay started. I trusted our two person team back home to hold down the fort, so we went.

On our second day, riding in a small tour van, I noticed someone walking about three feet away wearing one of our hats. I told our guide to stop, jumped out, chased the guy down, and took this photo with him. It was surreal to run into one of our hats on the other side of the globe. That was the moment the scale of what we were doing became real to me. I had adrenaline in my veins for the rest of the day.

The Reddit Hug Of Death

A Year Of Sales In 24 Hours.

That night I posted the photo on the front page of the internet, Reddit. Within minutes the post started gaining traction. People were into our story and liked our hats.

Soon we had thousands of people on the website making purchases. We sold out of almost every hat in stock within a couple of hours and had a backlog of hundreds of customer emails and questions, all while I was running on zero sleep, jet lagged to the max, and thousands of miles from the garage.

When it was all said and done, the photo had been seen over 2.9 million times that evening. Our website did more traffic in one day than in the entire previous year. We pulled a couple of months of sales in a 24 hour period.

Lucky for us, our guy Nick was back in the garage and handled it with grace. He packed and shipped orders on his end while I ordered inventory and managed customer service from my laptop. That mini viral photo elevated the brand to the next level. It gave us the funds to invest in our four head embroidery machine and introduced the Findlay Force to hundreds of thousands of people around the world.

Our First Assembly Line

All Hands In The Garage.

We survived the Reddit hug of death and kept the momentum. We had a slow but steady stream of orders, and our demand with Zumiez was so high that we needed to hire a few more friends to come help. The result was our first Findlay assembly line, and it was an amazing thing to see.

During this stretch we hit a few trade shows, sponsored a handful of events, went on team trips, and more. There is too much good stuff and not enough room to list it all, but if you dig through our old content you can relive some of it. Find us on Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat at @findlayhats.

A knockoff hat found at a national retailer copying Findlay's patent-pending lace technology. Aug 20, 2016

One Rough Day

Broke Up. Then Got Ripped Off.

This was probably one of the top five worst days of my life. Sarah and I broke up after four years of dating. A half hour later we got a photo showing that a major company had copied our patent-pending lace technology, possibly in every one of their 1,200 locations. Bad day.

I rushed down to their local store, and sure enough, they had three hats using our lace technology, one with our classic Mt. Findlay triangle. The hats had no pocket, and the laces were actually tied behind the grommet.

Everything Turned Out Okay

Sarah and I are still friends and co-founders. It turns out we work better as business partners. As for the company that ripped us off, they stopped selling our now patented technology, and they were closing doors weekly.

We Struck Gold.

Have I rambled enough yet? We will gloss over the next year or so. We had some employee turnover and brought on my old friend Mac full time in the garage. Maddie had been one of our sponsored skaters from day one, and she had just moved to Portland looking for part time work, so we clocked her in too.

In May 2017 I looked at our sales for the year and realized we were actually behind where we had been the year before. That scared me. We had never had a down year, and it simply could not happen. That fear pushed me to learn everything I could about improving sales, and the verdict was simple. We needed an extremely effective commercial to welcome new people to the Findlay Force, in front of exactly the right people.

After some trial and error, we struck gold. This video is still active today and still introduces new people to our brand.

Out Of The Garage

5,500 Square Feet.

In July 2017 we were bursting at the seams. We brought our friend and part time employee Savannah on full time. We simply could not keep up with demand. Production and inventory had crept into our living room and dining room, and the garage was no longer an efficient place to work.

We lucked into a 5,500 square foot space a couple of miles down the road. It needed a lot of TLC, but we could afford it, and we jumped on it. The next couple of months went to cleaning the place up and making it our own. We traded our four head embroidery machine for a fifteen head, laid down turf, built a mini ramp, and opened a showroom.

As demand kept growing, we kept hiring. We brought on Carol for production, Brett for sales, Monique for sales and customer service, and Oliver for our laser cutter, vinyl cutter, and general handyman needs. Cara came back to run video production and marketing, and our longtime in-house graphic designer, Alex, made the trek from sunny Arizona to Portland to work with us full time. That took our team from four to twelve people in a single year.

2018 & 2019

The X Games. And A Hard Year.

With such a strong 2017, 2018 followed a similar path. We kept upgrading the facility, the equipment, and the team. We got our first sublimation printer and heat press so we could make our own sublimated pockets in-house. We added a second fifteen head embroidery machine to keep up with hat demand, plus a second laser engraver.

We expanded across the country into a handful of retail locations while continuing our relationship with Zumiez. We set up our official Australian distribution for Findlay Hats Australia, and got our first chance to work with the X Games as an official supplier of hats.

With so much good stuff, 2019 was also the most challenging year in business we have ever had. Long story short, our growth phase had dried up, and our expenses were getting harder and harder to keep up with.

Survival Mode

We Dug In.

Did we panic? Oh yeah. It was intense, and I am not going to hide that. Business can be a cruel mistress, and things were rough. Despite the higher expenses and the growth that did not show up in 2019, we buckled down, got scrappy, and found a way through. I lost some hair and stressed plenty, but we kept our heads down and kept building.

We reviewed our options and made some key changes. Instead of chasing growth, we focused on maintaining what we already had. We added a new Premium Box to the website, simplified our hat offerings, and started dropping new "Weekly Exclusive" hats so there was something new and exciting every week. 2020 started off strong. This was going to be our year.

2020

20,000 Face Shields.

Yikes. Who saw that coming? In the early stages of the pandemic we realized this was bigger than us, and we needed to use our equipment to help any way we could.

We did some research and figured out we could use our 3D printer and laser engravers to make medical supplies. We took a loan from PayPal to cover the next three months of expenses, expecting a major drop in sales, and shifted our focus to making face shields and surgical masks.

Through it, we made close to 20,000 shields and over 1,000 surgical masks for medical facilities around the West Coast. Sourcing those materials at the peak of demand was intense on its own. Then coordinating a team working around the clock in shifts for nearly two weeks straight to finish the orders was an incredible amount of work. That is something I will always be proud of our team for.

2020 & 2021

Our First Store.

One thing we did not expect from the pandemic was online shopping hitting an all time high. As a business that is 80% online, we were positioned to benefit. Somehow our daily order volume kept growing and growing until we blew past our previous highs. We were back into a phase of hiring new people and investing in new equipment. Demand was high, but COVID restrictions still set us back as the whole world felt the squeeze of slower supply lines.

In the middle of all of it, we found our dream retail location in downtown Portland. The timing could not have been worse, but we figured it was a worthwhile gamble that things would eventually get better. We took the leap of faith and opened our first retail space in early 2021.

2022 & 2023

One Roof In North Portland.

We started to outgrow the old warehouse and went looking for something bigger. Around the same time, our downtown store was dealing with break-ins. Long story short, we wanted a new spot for both the warehouse and the store. After months of searching we found a beautiful space in North Portland and moved the warehouse and store into one location.

The new space has been great for us. It is cleaner, more spacious, and we finally have real offices with windows. It let us invest in more embroidery machines, up to 60 total heads now, plus extra equipment and storage to keep up with demand.

This video needs an update, since we have made some nice upgrades since then, but for now it will do.

New Retail Store

Something New Every Day.

With the move, we brought in our new retail store. Having everything under one roof lets the store stock a huge mix of hats, apparel, and accessories. There is something new in there every day, and we are really proud of what that place has become.

We have also leaned hard into live shopping. Seven times a day we do a one on one video chat with someone from the Findlay Force, and it has become a huge part of the store's success.

Straight From The Founder

A Note To The Findlay Force.

And that brings us to today, 2026. Twelve years in, and it still feels surreal. We are a tight 10 person team now, the best group we have ever had, and we are still doing our best to stay true to our core values and to good times.

I am not going to sugarcoat it. The market has gotten saturated, and times are as tough as they have ever been. But we are still here, still grinding, and working hard every day to be the best brand we can be. We got here by treating our customers right, working hard, and making a product we stand behind, and none of that has changed.

A huge shout out to our community. The Findlay Force is the whole reason we get to keep doing this. We will never forget our roots as we keep growing. Thank you for being part of this journey with us.
